Early life:
Keylor Antonio Navas Gamboa was born in San Isidro de El General, Costa Rica, on December 15, 1986, to parents Sandra Gamboa and Freddy Navas. Keylor Navas was born into a milieu of extreme poverty that compelled his parents to emigrate. When Keylor was a little child, Sandra and Freddy set off on a migration voyage to the American boundaries in order to enter the nation and seek possibilities in the land of dreams. Poor Keylor (seen below), who remained by himself with his grandma and sister, was left behind by both Freddy and Sandra since they were travelling on a perilous voyage full with uncertainty.
When they decided to leave their son and youngest kid behind, his parents once voiced their remorse. It was a terrible decision to have to make to leave Navas and his sister, particularly because her son was only four years old, Sandra, stated in a subsequent interview.
The Big Choice: Prior to crossing into American territory, Kaylor Navas’ father made a choice that altered the course of his family’s life. He ideally took his time to encourage his son to get actively involved in soccer while also instilling a passion of sport in him.
This showed 5-year-old Keylor playing soccer. He wasn’t just dreaming of being a goalie; he was determined.
Rejection and Rise to Fame:
Keylor Navas used money his parents had saved before they left to attend Pedregosso soccer school for seven years on the advise of his father. He was painfully unable to join the local town squad due to certain undesirable traits.
Due to his unattractive height and perception of being physically weak, Keylor Navas had a string of rejections. In 1995, Keylor finally had good fortune when he was accepted by Deportivo Saprissa, the club from his own country. He spent 10 years there as a player, earning six league championships. Scouts from the Spanish second division team Albacete saw his form and brought him to Europe.
During this period, Keylor was also called up to the Costa Rican national team as they trained for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which is when he first gained notoriety. Keylor’s streak of breathtaking bird-style saves helped him establish himself as one of the competition’s top keepers. If you recall, he was an important player of the Costa Rican team that defeated Uruguay 3–1 in their tournament’s opening group match.
In the penalty shootout against Greece, he once more produced a significant save that helped Costa Rica advance to their first-ever World Cup quarterfinal.
Keylor’s performances at the world cup caused Real Madrid to request his services and activate a €10 million buyout clause. Along with players like Joel Campbell and Anthony Contreras, the Costa Rican goalkeeper aspires to represent their nation with pride in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The rest, as they say, is now history.
